What is Therapy and what do I offer?
There are many forms of therapy but at the heart of it all is the desire to facilitate positive change when working with a client. That may be the soothing and exploring of emotions, leading to understanding and resolution. It may be more practical, changing something in yourself or the world around you to live better.
As I see it good therapy is always a partnership. We should both approach it as equals with our roles to play. One of the most important parts of good therapy is negotiating what those roles will be going forward, at the beginning but not always confined there. What do you need from me and what can I offer? What do you need to do to get to where you want to go?
What I Offer.
I work with Person Centred and Cognitive Behavioural approaches to therapy:
Person Centred Therapy: This approach focuses on building the relationship between therapist and client and through that creating an environment conducive to self-reflection and exploration. It is nominally led by the client. The goals are understanding and through that empowering the client to improve themselves and their life.
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy: This approach focuses on understanding problematic behavioural and thought patterns and targeting them directly. Creating an individual methodical approach to facilitate beneficial change in those thoughts and behaviours. The goals are awareness and understanding of current behaviour and thought patterns, then empowering the client to change those for the better.
I also branch out into what you might describe as Life Coaching, using my knowledge and experience to help people to form better life habits, routines, etc. I see this as creating a more firm foundation from which to live the rest of your life. It’s rarely the core problem, often a symptom if anything, but good habits make everything else a lot easier.
